Mop-wielding shop owner chases thief

knife-brandishing robber yesterday.

Mrs. Ann Powell, of the Rising Sun Shop in Southampton, was alone in her Middle Road store when the man entered demanding cash.

"He just came in the store with a knife and asked me for some money and I gave it to him,'' she said. "I'm very upset and it was a very unfortunate situation. He was a very unpleasant man.'' Police spokesperson Sgt. John Dale said the man entered the store at 11.35 a.m., making off with $130 in mixed currency.

"The proprietor was in the store at the time. The man left with a small amount of cash and made his escape on a red motorcycle along Middle Road in Southampton in an easterly direction,'' he said.

He described Mrs. Powell's attacker as being medium-dark-brown skinned and wearing dark clothing.

Mrs. Powell said she had been told by Police to say "as little as possible to anybody as it might hamper their investigation.'' However, she did say that she gave chase to the thief, waving a mop at him.

Sgt. Dale said it was possible that the robbery might be linked to another which took place the day before under similar circumstances.

In that case, the thief made off with approximately $1,000 from postmistress Mrs. Effie Ratteray (see story above).

Mrs. Ratteray was in the Bailey's Bay Post Office on Monday when a masked knifeman entered, brandishing a knife and demanding cash.

Like Mrs. Powell, Mrs. Ratteray was alone at the time.

"We haven't ruled out the possibility that the two could be connected,'' said Sgt. Dale.
