Some schools in the US are offering students in recovery independent study.

Focus on recovery includes eighteen written lessons, a mid-term assignment, final paper, and a home contract signed by the student and his/her parents.

It calls for two meetings a week between the student and the high school instructor.

It has been field tested and has shown that many recovering students take personal interest and pride in their work. They want to achieve and they want a good grade in the course. High school credit is an effective way to re-engage the student and parents should there be a relapse.

Parents, school professionals and treatment counselors are united by the structure of the course to provide the student support across the slippery stepping stones of early recovery. Most importantly, the student gets re-engaged in school! DRUGS DGS
