Captain Fox strikes back at `cowardly' letter writer

last week who suggested that the team lacked harmony and work ethics under his leadership and that an exodus is planned by some members of the team if Fox remains in charge.

Fox, in a letter (see Mailbox, left), responded by saying that the claim that several members of the team were planning to leave was a "total fabrication''.

Wrote Fox: "The alleged disharmony is non-existent. The letter has nothing to do with my ability to lead our team. It is nothing more than a personal attack.'' The writer compared Fox's captaincy of the team to that of his predecessor, Wendell Smith, who quickly made it known he has no intention of returning to the captaincy as the writer has suggested he should.

Said Fox: "Contrary to the author's belief I do not have the need or desire to compare myself to any other captains. For any individual to suggest that the accomplishments of this team over the years is the result of only one person's efforts is to totally disregard the abilities and dedication of the other team members.'' Since taking over the captaincy from the injured Smith in 1993 -- though he points out he officially got the position in 1994 -- Fox has led the team to the league and knockout cup double in his first season and the knockout cup again this year. The team finished runners-up to Bailey's Bay in 1994 and fourth this year as they again qualified for the Camel Cup.

However, that did not stop Fox from coming under fire by the supporter of the team.

"Unfortunately this cowardly individual does not have the guts to reveal their identity so the true St. George's fans can see what contribution (other than lip service) this person has made to the success of the team,'' Fox said in his letter.
