Parliamentary Primer

Governor -- the current Governor is Thorold Masefield. Since the Governor acts on behalf of the Queen, he is considered Bermuda's Head of State in her absence; The Premier of Bermuda is the chosen leader of the Ruling Party in the House of Assembly and is requested by the Governor to form the Government. Thus, the Premier is the Head of the Government. The current Premier is Jennifer M.

Smith; The Senate (also known as the Upper House) has 11 appointed members. Five are appointed by the ruling party, three are appointed by the Opposition and three are appointed by the Governor. The Senate is presided over by the President of the Senate, Olf Oughton; and The House of Assembly (also known as the Lower House) has 40 members. MP's are elected by the people living in Bermuda's 20 constituencies. There are two constituencies in each of the eight parishes while Pembroke parish has four electoral districts. Each of the constituencies elects two individuals to the House of Assembly. the House of Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the House, Stanley Lowe.
