the Swing Bridge failed to close properly.

Cars were left backed up on both sides of the bridge although cyclists were able to walk their two-wheeled vehicles across.

Last night Works and Engineering Minister C.V. (Jim) Woolridge said the bridge's main drive chain broke.

He explained that a tug was sent to pull the bridge closed and once this happened then the necessary repairs would be made.

A motorist at the scene said the bridge was closed from about 5.25 p.m. until 6 p.m. and that traffic was backed up along Cahow Way -- the former Kindley Field Road -- to the Bermuda International Airport.

The bridge has suffered repeated mechanical problems with the last one occurring in April.

The bridge had to be closed to marine traffic for a few days when it did not close properly while being tested and had to be hand cranked shut.
