Premier players too big for their boots

I was amazed when I heard last week that agents representing some English Premier League footballers were trying to put copyright on their goals, so they would make more money each time the goals were shown on television.

They must have forgotten they play football and they must think they're Hollywood stars now! What happens to the defenders who don't get to score so many goals? And the midfielders who create goals? Will they get a share of the royalties? It's not as if they don't earn enough money already. What will it be next? Will they want extra money each time they go to the bathroom?! The game has changed so much since I was playing I sometimes just don't want to talk about it.

We're still gearing up for the World Cup and training the national squad three times a week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Everybody's enthusiastic and they're working hard.

Hopefully, our plans for friendly matches against some Major League Soccer teams next month in Florida will come to something.

All the MLS teams are playing in a pre-season tournament and our best chance for a game will be against teams who have been knocked out. I've been talking to Colorado and Columbus on the phone.

And we should be able to fix up something with Tampa Bay. They were due to play in a tournament in Puerto Rico which may now be scotched. Our intended travel dates are February 15-24.

On the local scene, I watched Social Club's surprise 1-0 win against PHC in the FA Cup at Somerset on Sunday. I think PHC found out that if you miss as many chances as they did, they will eventually come back to haunt you.

Cougars did well to force a draw against Colts, but they are well capable of surprising people.

It was nice to see my old club West Ham pick up three points at the weekend with a 3-1 win at Leicester. The Hammers' result is always the first I look for in the English league. They've been struggling a bit in front of goal recently, so it was great that Paulo Wanchope managed to get a couple.
