A financial services marketing firm for the second largest credit card bank in the world is using Bermuda exclusively in a novel marketing tool to attract new clients.
Several hundred thousand US residents, in a national mailing in August, were invited to apply for a card that offers special deals from Bermuda merchants, according to a spokesman.
MBNA America Bank is offering The Bermuda Club Visa, as "the credit card that gives you the best of Bermuda with exclusive privileges''.
"This is the first destination-based travel credit card,'' said Mr. Joe Krousse of Boston-based Kessler Financial Services, whose firm's largest customer is the bank.
Mr. Krousse agreed that Bermuda is being used as a test market and told The Royal Gazette that another mailing will go out at the end of the year.
A brochure promises Americans that "as a member of The Bermuda Club, you'll enjoy special status at preferred establishments throughout Bermuda. Including the finest boutiques and galleries. Luxury hotels. Museums. Splendid restaurants and hot night spots. Health spas. Air, land and sea tour services.
More than 70 in all.
"Simply use of Bermuda Club Visa when you visit any of them, and you'll be eligible for benefits ranging from valuable savings on purchases to free gifts.'' MBNA issues premium and standard bank credit cards, marketing them through professional, fraternal, educational and other special interest associations.
They are endorsed by over 3,000 organisations.
MBNA conducts its business in Delaware and Maryland and through processing facilities in Texas.
The Visa card is usable as a regular credit card, but only takes on its special significance when used in Bermuda at a participating establishment.
The American card holders have a choice of some 70 merchants in Bermuda where the card brings some advantages.
For example, a near 40 percent reduction in room rates on the EP plan can be expected at the Elbow Beach Hotel for card holders. Elbow Beach and Pink Beach Club are the only two hotels listed, but a number of restaurants and retail shops are involved.
Cycle liveries, health clubs, liquor stores and beauty shops are also participating.
