Mr. Lines, who retired from the top job at the bank in 1994, was in Hong Kong for a series of meetings and complained of chest pains on Wednesday and he suffered a heart attack.

He had an operation the next day and is expected to stay in hospital for the next few days for observation.

It is understood that several family members have flown to Hong Kong.
