Pro Pearman wins in Azores

victory last week in the Verde International Pro-Am Tournament in the Azores, winning the pro event by five strokes.

Bermuda's top pro enjoyed a five-shot lead after the first round of the 36-hole event with a one-under 71.

And even though he slumped to six-over on the second day, his five-over 149 total was enough to give him victory by five shots over an English professional. About 40 pros competed.

"It was a really tough course, one of the toughest I've played,'' said Pearman, who noted that the course record was just three-under-par.

"That just shows you it's a pretty tough golf course. I had a few three-putts on the last day but I had a good cushion. This is my first overseas win so I'm pleased with that.'' Pearman was part of a large group who travelled from Bermuda, while the tournament also attracted players from the United States, Canada, Spain, England and Portugal.

Joe Repose, who was responsible for taking about 60 locals to the tournament, was in Pearman's pro-am team which finished eighth overall. The other team members were Joe Lambert and Millard Beach.

JJ Madeiros' team were tops among those from Bermuda, finishing sixth overall, while Lorraine Pereira won the women's division.

Pearman is hoping to compete in some buy.com tour events in May, thanks to local businessman David Ezekiel who is helping to pay his travel expenses.

"I do thank him for his assistance,'' said Pearman.
