Pereech, Heslop finish out of the medals

yesterday after competing at the Grand Copa Centro Equestrian Invitational Showjumping Competition in Puerto Rico.

Both put up creditable showings at the overseas event, with 16-year-old Pereech placing seventh in the 14-18 category, while the younger Heslop was a similar seventh among 12 to 14-year-olds.

The pair rode horses owned by local residents and were able to garner a few top placings during the week, earning ribbons and individual day trophies for their efforts.

"It was a very good competition, a great experience and I learned a lot,'' said Pereech, who made her third trip to the competition. "It's also good culturally, because you stay in Puerto Rican homes where they speak a different language and have different customs.'' Aiding the pair while on the Island was Canadian coach Rob Carey, whose assistance proved invaluable.

Pereech indicated a desire to compete at the North American Young Riders competition next year.

She is set to attend Centenary College in New Jersey in September and expects to take her horse with her.

"I think gaining more experience is the best way to learn,'' said Pereech.

"Also listening to different people and getting whatever good advice they have to offer.''
