Wahl, Marshall save their best for last

Amateur Stroke Play Championships for the second time with a three-over-par 74 yesterday under trying conditions at the Port Royal Golf Club for a four-round total of 302.

Wahl beat out Glenn Simmons by six strokes for the day and the tournament.

Simmons, playing on his favourite course, could only manage an 80 on the day that it mattered most.

Tied for third on 238 with Simmons and first-round leader Max Atherden after three rounds, Wahl made his move as he `paid no mind' to the weather conditions and blazed around the course to win in relatively easy fashion. For his efforts he took home the Tony Lema Memorial Trophy.

On the women's side Kim Marshall carried on the domination she has enjoyed in the junior circuit as she emerged with top honours on account of a 75 round, for a three-round total of 233.

Marshall was three better than runner-up Judithanne Astwood, who wound up on 236 for the tournament followed by Shirley Wildi in third with 244 .

Port Royal I won the battle, but Bermuda Golf Association Men stayed ahead in the war as they cling to a half-point lead in the Bermuda Amstel Summer League.

Under monsoon conditions at Port Royal on Saturday, Royal's number one team managed a score of 307 followed by Mid Ocean Club with 317 and BGA Men on 332.

The result left BGA precariously placed at 16 points after two rounds of play.

Royal are next with 151 and Port Royal II lurk with 12 points to their credit.

The `B' Division saw the Bermuda Junior Golf Association again take top honours and have accummulated the maximum number of points (20) to lead second-placed Castle Harbour by eight.

JACK WAHL -- Second stroke play title.
