Businessman and deputy Mayor Mr. William Boyle has already announced he would be standing.

Yesterday Mr. Dismont -- who is abroad and will be returning this weekend -- delivered a statement through the Corporation of Hamilton.

"I will be offering myself as a candidate in the forthcoming Hamilton Corporation elections on April 19,'' he said.

"I thank the taxpayers for honouring me with their support for the past six years as Mayor.

"So many city projects that are in the planning stage are about to get underway. I believe that I can best represent the taxpayers by implementing these projects with strong leadership, fairness and continuity.'' Mr. Dismont, 78, pointed out he had been a common councillor, alderman, deputy Mayor, and Mayor.

He had served in these posts with "pride, understanding and dedication''.

"My performance record speaks for itself. I solicit your support for one more term as I am here to serve my constituents on behalf of the welfare of the city.'' Mr. Dismont and Mr. Boyle are described as "very good friends''.

But 58-year-old Mr. Boyle has stated it was time for Mr. Dismont to let a younger man take over.

"I think age is a factor, which will work in my favour should there be a contest,'' he said last week.

The Paget father-of-four has been deputy Mayor for six of his 25 years on the Corporation.
