Trio set new mark in junior races
between the ages of four and 12 turned out for the annual Pro Shop junior races at Police Field in Prospect on Saturday.
Winton Woodley, of West Pembroke School, slashed a whopping 15 seconds off the previous record held by Shaun Joell in the boys' 4-5 age group race over a quarter of a mile when he clocked one minute and 27 seconds -- equivalent to a 5:48 mile pace.
In the boys' 6-7 division, West End's Terron Christopher set another new mark when he shaved two seconds off Shane Morrissey's 1993 record over half a mile.
Christopher clocked three minutes and four seconds.
The day's third record belonged to ever-improving Cody Lima, one of the leaders in the current KPMG junior road race series.
Lima, who attends Sandys Middle School, knocked 12 seconds off the mark held by Terrence Dill in the boys' 10-12 division, raced over one and a half miles.
Camille Simons (West End), Flora Duffy (Warwick Academy) and Lima all led their schools to victory in the respective girls' 6-7, girls' 10-12, and boys' 10-12 divisions. The team prizes were calculated on the finishing positions of the top three pupils from each school.
Final results saw a three-way tie for leading school between West End Primary, Somerset and Saltus -- each with two wins.
