Marvellous massey

Swimming Championships in Trinidad yesterday morning when he knocked almost two seconds off Stephen Fahy's long course age group record in the 11-12 100 metres freestyle heats.

Massey's quadruple-A time of 1:02.33 shattered the record of 1:04.26 set by Fahy at the CISC in Curacao two years ago and won him a place in last night's final.

The talented youngster was also due to swim in the final of the 11-12 100m butterfly having established an official record of 1:14.35 in the heats.

Joining Massey in finals last night were Jean Richardson (15-17 100 free); Jenny Gosling (15-17 100 fly); and 100 metres backstroke bronze medallist Tiffany Gosling (15-17 200 back).

Massey gave notice of his fine form on Sunday when he anchored the 11-12 boys 4x100 freestyle relay team to fourth place in the final. The team, which also included Craig Ferguson, Trevor Nelson and Nicholas van de Weg, completed the course in 4:29.96.

The 15-17 girls 4x100 freestyle relay team, of Jenny and Tiffany Gosling, Alicia Mullan and Jean Richardson, also came fourth in their final as did Jenny Gosling in the 100m breaststroke final.

Mullan finished fifth in the 200 freestyle while Richardson was seventh in the 100 breaststroke.

And in the final of the 15-17 100m breaststroke, Craig Roberts swam 1:13.78 to finish seventh.
