Under the Magistrates Amendment Act 1993 passed on Friday, Magistrates' Court can deal with civil claims up to a maximum of $10,000. Previously the limit was $5,000.

Delegated Affairs Minister the Hon. Ann Cartwright DeCouto said the change was made "to take account of inflation,'' and avoid "the red tape and trappings'' associated with Supreme Court in a greater number of cases.

"It does enable creditors to dispense with the services of lawyers in straightforward cases,'' she said.

The Opposition supported the change. Special Assistant Non-Ministries Mr.

Stanley Morton said the change was "a prudent move ... in keeping with the times.'' The limit was last increased to $5,000 from $2,500 in 1986.
