The man suffered his wounds at around 6.45 p.m. on Saturday after two masked men came into his home in Pembroke and immediately started hitting him with a hammer, Police spokeswoman Sgt. Roseanda Jones said yesterday.

She said the motive for the incident -- one of two violent assaults over the weekend -- was unclear. At 1.30 a.m. on Saturday, a 27-year-old Hamilton Parish woman was taken to hospital with a broken jaw after being beaten by her husband.

An investigation into the hammer attack is continuing, said Stgt. Jones, adding that the man is in satisfactory condition on a general ward.

In other weekend crime news, Police reported that 13 homes, guest houses and businesses were broken into and a handbag was snatched. The latter was taken by a male on a motorbike as a 29-year-old female tourist was walking east on Pitt's Bay Road in Pembroke around 10.30 p.m. on Saturday.

The bag contained a small amount of cash and personal items.

Also stolen between Saturday and Sunday was a total of 21 cycles and one car.

One man managed to retrieve his cycle after he saw three boys take the locked bike from the tennis courts at Pompano Beach Club in Southampton around noon on Saturday.

After giving chase, the man was able to catch one of the boys, a 14-year-old who was subsequently arrested and bailed into the custody of his parents. The two other boys had not been apprehended, according to Sgt. Jones.

Sgt. Jones also requested the public's help in retrieving the stolen car, an orange Hyundai Excel hatchback with the licence number 22674.

The car, which had no front wheels, was taken between 2.20 p.m. and 3.00 p.m.

on Saturday from outside the owner's home at Swans Bay Hill in Pembroke.
