Pembroke Dump will be out of work next week.

On February 15, a contractor will start handling the household waste a little further east on Palmetto Road, at the Tynes Bay Incinerator, Works and Engineering Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons said.

Butterfield Excavation has won a one-year contract to take waste from passers-by and put it in large hoppers which will be rolled into the incinerator, Mr. Gibbons said. The Pembroke Dump will be then closed to all but horticultural waste.

Llewellyn Butterfield, the company's managing director, said he has no immediate plans to hire any of the men now handling the waste outside the Pembroke Dump.

"We advertised, and we've had tons of people apply,'' Mr. Butterfield said.

But, "I don't know if any of those people there applied. I haven't personally approached them.'' He said it was possible some of the men could be hired "over the course of time.'' He plans to employ about two full-time and six part-time people.

There will be no charge to drop off household waste at the incinerator, but separation at home will be "critical,'' Mr. Butterfield said.

There must be no fluorescent tubes or other hazardous waste in what is brought to the incinerator.
