The blaze -- which was reported around 11.30 p.m. -- partially engulfed a desolate building next to Four Star Pizza on Angle Street.

Fire Service spokesperson Lt. Jon Thompson said the fire had caused significant damage to the roof, walls and floor, but the building itself was of no monetary value.

"We understand the owners were going to tear it down,'' he explained. "As far as an estimate goes, the building was derelict and had no value.'' Police media relations spokeswoman Evelyn James Barnett added that a 41-year-old woman was assisting Police with investigations into the suspicious blaze.

It was believed the building sometimes sheltered the homeless, but no one was inside when the fire broke out.

Fire Service chiefs have installed a new telephone switchboard to streamline emergency calls and general inquiries.

Receptionists will answer calls on the main 292-5555 number on weekdays, between 8.30 and 5 p.m.

After-hours callers will be guided through an automated answering system and emergency calls will still be diverted via 911.

But personal calls for on-duty officers cannot be made through the switchboard -- and are only allowed during set times: 10.15 to 10.30 a.m., 12 noon to 1 p.m., 3 p.m. to 3.15 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight.

Personal calls to Hamilton should be made on 293-9826/7. For Port Royal, call 238-9901 and for Clearwater call 293-9831.
