Chief Justice the Hon. Mr. Justice Ward told Mrs. Ena Trott she had signed bail for Karyn Moniz to ensure she showed up for her Supreme Court trial.

Mrs. Trott was in court when Moniz' name was called during the monthly arraignments session.

When she failed to appear, Mr. Justice Ward asked the woman, "Do you know where she is? Did she go away without telling you?'' Mrs. Trott, taking her cheque book out of her handbag, said she had no idea where her granddaughter was and as a result would pay the money to the court.

Mr. Justice Ward ordered the full $3,000 to be forfeited immediately.

Robert W.C. Washington of Warwick was left standing alone in Supreme Court early last month when Moniz failed to show up for her first arraignment hearing.

He pleaded guilty to handling cocaine intended for supply after four other drug charges were dropped.

A warrant for Moniz' arrest was issued and Washington was remanded in custody until this Friday for sentencing.

But attempts to find Moniz were apparently unsuccessful.

She stands accused of possessing cocaine intended for supply.

The court heard at the time that Moniz had requested permission last October to visit her father's family in America for an important function.

Moniz' lawyer Mr. Delroy Duncan said a Police inspector had agreed that there would be no problem with Moniz traveling overseas.

"But in February an officer contacted me and said that Karen Moniz was no longer on the Island,'' Mr. Duncan said.

"I called all the numbers she had given me which included her boyfriend's, and there was no evidence that she was still here.

"I have no information about her whereabouts and can provide no other explanation to the court.''
