Mother to face trial on police assault charges

The trial of a young mother charged with assaulting five people including four police officers has been adjourned until later this month.Felisha Johnson, 23, of Camp Road, Warwick, asked in Magistrates’ Court for an adjournment, in order for her lawyer to return to the Island. Crown counsel Karen King did not object, and Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the case until a mention on January 14.Ms Johnson denies assaulting four police officers on December 29, in an incident starting around 10pm at the Ice Queen restaurant, in Paget. She has pleaded guilty to willfully damaging a cash register there, and to violently resisting arrest. Asked by Mr Warner why she should not be held in custody for another two weeks, Ms Johnson said: “I have a small child and would rather not.”She said she lives alone, works part-time at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, and that the child’s father is looking after him at present. Ms Johnson admitted to having the child with her at the time of her arrest but continued to deny assault. Mr Warner gave her bail of $2,000 on surety.
