Cambridge Beaches might be the last place you think of when it comes to a great ‘old school’ bash, but the classy venue this weekend opens its doors for a night of movin’ and groovin’.Event organiser Andrew Phillips said mature party goers could expect the same great old school vibes and disco atmosphere at previous Dockyard Old School Explosions but at a new venue.Tunes from KC and the Sunshine Band, Earth, Wind and Fire, the Jackson Five and the Bee Gees will play from 8pm until the wee hours of the morning.Mr Phillips said one of the great things about such parties was that they rekindled memories of good times gone by.“Everybody remembers going to Ice Queen after the party was over. I think that is a really big factor in why this event has been so popular in the past.”Since it was first ushered in by Wedco four years ago, the Old School Explosion has attracted anywhere between 1,200 and 1,900 people each time.Host Allan Young, known as DJ Younguls, said he got involved two years as a way to “add a different flavour” to the event. Now considered one of Bermuda’s top old-school DJs, he was extremely popular with Disco 40 regulars in the 80s.He said: “There was a progression from playing in clubs to doing events, not only doing events for people, but also holding my own events.“It escalated from there to doing gigs at pretty much every hotel except Cambridge Beaches.”He will get the chance to lead the party there this weekend.Said hotel general manager Clarence Hofheins: “It worked perfectly with what we are trying to do at Cambridge Beaches, to change locals’ mindset of the hotel.“We want the residents to know Cambridge Beaches is open for everyone.“We are looking to attract a more mature crowd and thought this would be a perfect venue to show locals our three restaurants that many people in Bermuda don’t know about.”The party will kick off at Tamarisk restaurant terrace overlooking Mangrove Bay, coined an “undiscovered gem” by Mr Phillips.Mr Young said the event was sure to be a crowd-pleaser.“It’s free of any kind of incidents because old-school music doesn’t have that flavour to it. Old school is about being out and having fun.“It doesn’t matter who’s there, what you look like, how you are dressed, you are just coming out to have good, old school, clean fun.”People are encouraged to carpool for the event. Dress code is smart casual.Tickets, $35 in advance and $50 at the gate, are on sale at Audio Visual locations in Somerset and Hamilton, Custom Acoustics on Cox’s Hill Road in Pembroke and at Cambridge Beaches.
