My favourite place in Bermuda is Front Street in Hamilton. After the hectic pace of a busy practice in Baltimore, Maryland, my wife and I find it extremely relaxing to walk down Front Street with the water on one side and the myriad shop and restaurants on the other. In my view, Front Street has cornered the market on friendliness and hospitality. The atmosphere reminds me of what it was like in many ports of the United States a few decades ago, but which no longer exists. Many of the shop owners and their customers recognise me from my past picture in The Royal Gazette and often approach me like old friends with questions. Some refer to me as the `newspaper doctor'. Although I've never subscribed to the philosophy of instant diagnosis, I do try to help them even if it is only to direct them to appropriate medical care. Some Bermudians even come to see me as patients in my office in Baltimore. There are many places in Bermuda where I feel as welcome as if I were visiting members of my own family. A stroll down Front Street enables me to meet some of my extended family. And the ride back to my pleasant Cambridge Beaches Hotel, conversing with a friendly taxi driver, caps a perfect day in Bermuda.
