Bromby's off to the races again

will next Thursday fly out to Miami where he intends to use the Bacardi Cup regatta as his first serious build-up to the Summer Games in Savannah, Georgia.

In the last three years Bromby has made steady progress in the Bacardi Cup with finishes of 42nd, 15th and seventh.

But that was when he had his long-time childhood buddy Paul Fisher as crew.

Various commitments have made it difficult for Fisher to compete on a regular basis this year and consequently Bromby has been forced to find a replacement.

This is where prominent powerboat racer Lee White has come into the picture and Bromby is confident in his new crew.

"Lee and I did a Star regatta together in Miami last February and he seemed to enjoy it. We have raced together in One Design boats over the last three years and we've been good friends for several years,'' said Bromby.

White was one of the links in the winning crew that helped Bromby to conquer the IOD World Championship in San Francisco and Marblehead the last two years.

White was also there among the crew at the Pan Am Games in 1991 when Bromby won a bronze medal in the J-24 class which was his first and only attempt competing in that class at an international meet.

"The progress that Paul and I have made in the Bacardi Cup is obvious, now I want to win it before the Olympics comes around or at least finish among the top three within the next three years,'' said Bromby.

"It's not going to be an easy goal and I could be asking for too much, but it is one that I am setting for myself.'' After Miami, the next major event for Bromby will be the Nations Cup Regatta, which will take place in Newport in June.

The Bacardi Cup will be held off Coral Reefs Yacht Club in Miami from March 7-10.
