famous shipwrecks, Dr. Robert Ballard will help launch the newly-formed Bermuda Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (BAAST) with a lecture tonight at the Harbour Room of the Princess Hotel.

A former US Navy officer and engineer, Dr. Ballard has spent a lifetime exploring the world's oceans. He is best known as the discoverer of the wrecks of the Titanic and the great German battlecruiser the Bismarck .

He is also notable as an educator, founding the Jason project in 1988. Since then some 750,000 students, including 3,000 from Bermuda, have participated on six expeditions and discovered the biological and technological marvels of the undersea world.

According to Dr. Ballard: "We know more about the far side of the moon than we know about our own marine habitat...less than one-tenth of one percent of the deep sea has yet to be explored.'' The lecture, which starts at 7.30 p.m., is open to the public. Tickets for students cost $2 while adults cost $5.
