Boa chief woods in support of idea

Commonwealth Games opening up to team sports, as long as there is a qualification requirement similar to that for the individual sports.

Woods admitted yesterday that he was aware of the consideration being given by Commonwealth Games officials in regards to adding cricket, rugby, netball and field hockey to the Games in time for the 1998 Games in Malaysia.

"There has been some indication that for netball some consideration has been given,'' said Woods yesterday. "In September there will be a Commonwealth Games meeting in Victoria and at this time a final decision will be made (on cricket, rugby and field hockey).

"Presently there are no team sports in the Commonwealth Games and my personal opinion is I'm for all sports. As long as there is a qualification I don't see any problems. Track and field, swimming and boxing is about it from Bermuda's standpoint.'' Woods disclosed yesterday that Bermuda has made a bid to host the Commonwealth Games meeting in 1995 after he, himself, had tabled that motion. Guernsey are also bidding to host the meeting.

At the '95 meeting a decision will be made on the hosts for the 2002 Games.

Woods thinks it would be a boost for Bermuda to be able to host a meeting.

"The average meeting is two days when a decision will be made as to who would be holding the Games,'' said Woods.

"The countries bidding will make a presentation. Because we don't have the infrastructure to hold a Games it would be nice to hold a meeting. I'm going to be lobbying more and more to have meetings in Bermuda.''
