Tourism to be month's focus

Now in its 13th year, Education Month was initially established as a means by which schools could publically showcase the high standard and quality of work done by their students. The Hon. Gerald Simons, who was Education Minister at the time, said he felt it important that the community have an opportunity to see what was happening in schools around Bermuda. Now an annual occurrence, each Education Month revolves around a different community interest with business, multiculturalism and technology some of those which have been highlighted in the past. The observances were offically declared open by Education Minister Jerome Dill before dozens of the Island's preschoolers earlier this month. It was at that time he announced that this year's theme would be `Tourism: We Are Bermuda'. "It is our intent to promote an understanding of appreciation for the part each of us play in the success of this industry,'' Mr. Dill said at the time. "I have been informed of, and indeed hope to see the number of displays and projects in our schools which portray the intention to promote understanding and appreciation for the lives and work of all Bermudians.'' Many teachers said they were impressed with the interest students had shown during the month in the tourism industry, with most surprised that the students -- especially the younger ones, knew as much as they did. Throughout the month, various schools have held and will be holding, open houses, musical programmes, exhibits and assemblies related to tourism in Bermuda. And The Royal Gazette also publishes a Schools Page once a week during Education Month, highlighting students' writing and drawing skills.
