Yesterday's editorial incorrectly indentified taxi driver Warrington Zuill as Willard Zuill.

Taxi driver Willard Zuill has succeeded in making the street lights go on in Tucker's Town. Poles have gone up from Pink Beach Club to Marriott's Castle Harbour Resort on a dim and rather lonely section of road where there has been a need for street lighting for a very long time. It is a winding stretch of road with considerable traffic to the Castle Harbour and to the Mid Ocean Club.

Mr. Zuill took his case to then Parliamentary candidate Michael Dunkley and contrary to the often expressed opinion that "nothing gets done'', Mr. Zuill and Mr. Dunkley have made a difference. With the cooperation of Minister of Works C.V. (Jim) Woolridge, a bad stretch of road will be lit.

We see this as an indication that in Bermuda, individuals can make a difference. One of the great advantages of living in a small place like Bermuda is that individual people can be heard and can make an impact.

There are other ways in Bermuda for individuals to have their say and to have their opinions taken seriously. Not the least of these is letters to the Editor of this newspaper. Very often this newspapers hears from Cabinet Ministers, senior civil servants and others in positions of authority that they have been influenced in their decisions by letters they have read. It is not always the things that get done as a result but plans or ideas that are dropped or withdrawn because an opinion has been printed.

The same is true for radio talk shows. While sometimes the opinions expressed in letters and on the radio are outrageous and the "facts'' presented are not facts, people do listen and do pay attention to the opinions expressed.

There is a great deal of freedom of speech and freedom of expression in Bermuda. We think freedom should be protected and fostered. Our regret is that there are still fears, some real and some imagined, which prevent people from using their names with either their writings or their thoughts. For all sorts of reasons people sometimes fear reprisals resulting from their opinions or they simply fear attacks on their opinions and prefer to remain anonymous. It seems to us that what is required is more tolerance of other people's views.

Be that as it may, individuals still have the ability to be heard and to make a difference. Mr. Willard Zuill is a prime example of that. He expressed himself and he got the job done.
