From the time children are able to support themselves by hanging on to the sides of their cribs, they move to music. Encouraging children's efforts in creative movement can be fun as well as instructional.

Try playing "Dance to the Music'' with your child. All you need is a radio or record player. Explain to your child that he or she should dance when you turn on the music and "freeze'' when you turn off the music. You need only manipulate the volume control of your radio or tape recorder to turn the sound on and off. The game-like quality of "Dance to the Music'' will make this activity one your child will enjoy again and again.

Don't become frustrated if your child has difficulty moving and freezing to the music; children sometimes have difficulty freezing all the excitement.

What your child will learn: In dancing your child will learn better body coordination. Your child's perceptual skills will also be stimulated as he or she learns to make his or her body respond to what is heard. The free-play quality of the game will encourage your child's creativity.

Encourage your child to follow the directions of the game by joining in the fun yourself. Play a variation of the game where your child must clap hands to the music.
