Musical evening tonight at National Gallery
and the Southampton Glebe and Elliott Handbell Choirs providing this month's entertainment.
The Apex Four, a semi-professional, Bermudian male a capella quartet, who are also members of Bethel AME Church, have toured internationally since 1983 in the US, Canada and the West Indies.
The well-known group, consisting of Garry Bean, Robert Symonds, Eric Whitter and Harry Bean, have sung together now for 22 years and specialise in spirituals.
They will be joined in concert by the Handbell Choirs, under the direction of music teacher Mr. Lloyd Matthew.
It was in 1992 that Mr. Matthew formed a workshop camp in the art of handbell ringing. The enthusiastic response by the students, who have also had the opportunity to develop music theory and appreciation, led to the formation of the choirs. In November, they appeared at the 8th annual Premier's Concert at City Hall.
The four-octave handbell set was a gift of Elliott School's PTA, whilst the Southampton Glebe School's three-octave set was purchased from the proceeds of a student fund-raising drive.
Tonight's concert will commence at 5.30 p.m. and wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Tickets at $10 ($7 for members) are available at the door. Director Mrs. Laura Gorham urges everyone to enjoy "a musical and visual feast'', adding that the Icons and Stained Glass exhibition is still on in the Ondaatje Wing, as well as Masterworks' Festival of Colours in the upper gallery.
