on the US Naval Air Station, says a Government MP.

Mr. Rick Spurling, who represents St. George's South, made his comments this week after his United Bermuda Party branch annual general meeting on Monday.

While most of the housing on the Base was American-built, Mr. Spurling estimated there were about 20 older Bermudian homes on the Base, some of them in good condition.

Where possible, the St. David's families who used to live in the homes should be given the first chance to buy them, he said.

"This would be a worthwhile consideration for some of the families in St.

David's who were deprived of their family homes for good reason back in the 1940s.

"It may be possible for them to buy the homes back,'' Mr. Spurling said. "It may not be possible.'' He was not yet aware of any St. David's families coming forward to make a claim for any of the homes.

At the meeting, Mr. Spurling and fellow St. George's South MP Mrs. Grace Bell fielded questions from about a dozen constituents.

Among other subjects, the residents wanted to know whether the non-Bermudian Base homes would be used for low-cost housing, "which they don't want,'' Mr.

Spurling said. "I said that was not my understanding.''
