Having extinguished all challenges the last two years, Mexico's Marcus Barreto opted out of this year's event, leaving room for a new champion and making for much speculation as to who might assume the top spot.

American Jerry Lawson -- if judging by previous times -- stands as the probable favourite, followed by the likes of Keith Brantley, David Lewis and Eddie Hellebuyck.

Add the prospects of several of the Bank of Butterfield Elite Mile runners doubling up over the two days and the picture becomes even more clouded.

Mile champ Michal Bartoszak and former winner Joe Falcon could certainly add to the intrigue and possibly spur an eclipse of Briton Geoff Smith's record of 28 minutes and 14 seconds.

Meanwhile, locals will be hopeful of fine showings by Kavin Smith and Tracy Wright, who were 12th and 13th last year, clocking 33:17 and 33:37 respectively.

It is hard to get past Anne-Marie Letko when referring to the women, as the rising female distance runner has distanced herself as the person to beat in this field and in the process has possibly become the best 10-K runner in the United States.

However, races are never won on paper and there are legitimate world class athletes to present bonafide challenges.

Misti Demko, Lisa Harvey and Laura Mykytok are all included in the run for the money.

Anna Eatherley heads the local female list and expects a tough run on a demanding course.

TRACY WRIGHT -- One of the Bermudians to watch.
