Soccer match marred by fight
deciding what action to take after a melee between Somerset and Wolves on Tuesday night.
Five players were sent off and spectators from both teams became involved during the Second Division match at Somerset.
The incident began three minutes before the half when Bermuda youth team player Joey Rego was blown down for a foul on Somerset's Michael Brangman inside the Wolves half.
Before the freekick could be taken Brangman retaliated, resulting in a free-for-all. By the time the match resumed after about a five-minute delay, Simons had shown the red card to five players, including both Brangman and Rego. "It happened so fast and then dispersed so quickly,'' said Simons yesterday.
Simmons said he was concerned about the lack of support from club officials during the incident as he and linesmen Sherwin Hollis and Arthur Furqan had to handle the situation by themselves.
But Simons said he never considered abandoning the game.
"One of my concerns was on the far side where the spectators were able to get onto the field quite easily,'' he added.
"If it wasn't for the spectators coming onto the field it wouldn't have been as bad. Both Somerset and Wolves spectators were getting at each other.'' Also ejected were both goalkeepers -- Hewvonnie Brown of Wolves and Somerset's Keenan Tucker, who ran from the other end of the field to get involved, and Wolves' Dion Wainwright.
Both teams put outfield players into goal and the second half went on without further incident as Somerset wiped out a 2-0 lead with goals from Musceo Hunt in the 78th minute and Anthony Burchall in the 80th. Khari Sharrieff scored in the 27th and 47th minutes for Wolves.
Meanwhile east end rivals St. George's and St. David's meet tonight (9 p.m.) in a Friendship Trophy match at Somerset.
Both teams suffered second straight league losses on Tuesday night when St.
David's went down to North Village and St. George's were hammered by PHC.
St. George's are having the worst start to the season of any team, having lost four league and Cup games without scoring a goal and conceding 20.
But they are also the defending Friendship Trophy champions, having beaten the likes of Vasco, North Village, PHC and Devonshire Colts on their way to their first major title in April.
Also tonight, BAA Wanderers and Robin Hood will meet in the Group A final of the Commercial League Cup.
