City Hall is to end.

Thirty-two years after the imposing white building was built on Church Street it is to be given signs on its outside.

And the man who has the job of placing the signs on the walls today is Mr.

Lawson Mapp, not only a city councillor, but one of the men who painted the original crests on the building.

Corporation of Hamilton secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt said: "Since it was built in 1960 there has never been a sign telling people that it was City Hall. While most Bermudians know it well many visitors have no idea what it is.'' Mr. Mapp said: "It has been a bigger problem since the Bermuda National Gallery, the Society of Arts and the City Hall Theatre were introduced. They have lost customers because people did not know it was the City Hall.'' Mr. Mapp said that in 1960 at the age of 18 he was given the job, with his employer Mr. Harry Green, of painting the crests on City Hall.

"I never thought when I was painting those crests that one day I would be a councillor inside there,'' he said.
