Berkeley School of Music and enjoying every second of it.

Leroy is majoring in Musical Production and Engineering after playing drums and piano for 13 years.

The young organist at New Testament Church of God on Cedar Hill said his passion is complete -- so much so, he has no idol.

"If you have an idol, you're focused on one thing,'' he explained.

Leroy said he explores all ways and means in music and doesn't want to restrict himself.

Classes at the Berkeley School of Music include air training, harmonics and musical synthesis.

But the fun and games of a musical school are tempered by fierce competition, said Leroy.

"It's real competitive. I'm laying low, trying to gain as much wisdom before I move.'' Leroy said problems can arise when people try to learn from one another because they feel they're holding onto a great secret.

Outside of the music labs, Leroy tries to expose himself to all the things any other young man would -- sports.

"I'm a survivor. I can play out there but I'm not vicious like some of these other guys,'' he said.

"It's like when I see drums, I think of it as art. You create anything you feel. I try to do things, other things, people won't do.

"Everybody is good and I grasp from a lot of different styles they play,'' he said.

Although Leroy has another four years before graduation, he looks forward to a career in musical production and playing in a gospel choir.

"I love gospel music. I can just feel the music touch me.'' he added.
