Opposition Leader Alex Scott will more than likely be nominated to challenge Jennifer Smith for the leadership of the party tonight.

"There are probably one or two people actively lobbying for Alex, but my guess is at the end of the day he will probably back down,'' said one source.

"Most people believe she (Ms Smith) has done a good job and she hasn't been given enough time. I think people will rally behind her.'' Another insider agreed: "Alex feels that a delegate will nominate him, but I'm not sure he'll take up the challenge.'' The PLP, meeting all week at their 29th delegate's convention, will tonight hold an election for party officers. Various sources have contacted and told The Royal Gazette Ms Smith will "probably'', "definitely'' or "more than likely'' face a challenge from the floor.

Ms Smith herself earlier this week said she anticipated a leadership challenge: "This is normal. This is the time and the place to do it,'' she said.

And Mr. Scott added to the speculation, telling The Royal Gazette : "Should the delegates put my name forward and it gets sufficient support I would choose to listen.'' One source indicated a clause to party's constitution governing election of officers was earlier this week changed, making a victory for Alex Scott more likely.

It is understood the source added, the party old guard and the new look faction led by Ms Smith are at loggerheads over the future of the party.

Another insider however hotly denied the split, calling it propaganda.
