Friday, gave The Royal Gazette his definition of a liberal arts education.

He said: "The liberal arts is the core that every student should experience.

"It is what develops critical thinking and critical thinking is the most important characteristic for an individual to advance in any career, in any field.

"The liberal arts degree focuses on a core of knowledge which evolves around the arts and builds a foundation which has to deal with knowledge.

"In 1987, the Bank of Chicago only hired those people who had liberal arts degrees.

"A group of black students from the black colleges were then trained within the banks and awarded the bank's own MBA.

"Those people are now the executives of banks all over the United States.

"I would hire a student of the liberal arts to do any job. Students of the liberal arts can adjust to any field because they have been taught how to think.

"If people want to confuse it with a degree in education -- that's most certainly not what it is. Every student should get a liberal arts degree before moving into any field whether it's management, law or medicine.'' Dr. Donald Peters
