Woman admits forging Bank cheque
for cheque forgery.
Coleen S. Bartrum of East Gate Lane pleaded guilty to forging a cheque, uttering it and using false pretences.
Prosecuting Insp. Peter Duffy told the Court that on July 9 Police received a complaint from the manager of the Southampton Princess branch of the Bank of N.T. Butterfield and Son Ltd., who had detained Bartrum.
"She approached the bank teller and forged and uttered the cheque which was made out for $579.73,'' said Insp. Duffy. "The teller inspected the cheque and discovered the amount was changed in pencil to $679.73.'' Bartrum admitted the offences to Police and said her twin sister gave her the cheque to cash.
Duty Counsel Mr. Steven Hankey told the Court: "It was a silly prank. For her to write it in pencil opposed to pen is a silly way for her to go about it if she was serious about what she was doing. This is her first offence of any kind.'' Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined Bartrum $100 on each count.
