`I renew my pledge to serve'
the job as Queen's representative in Bermuda after being sworn in by Chief Justice Austin Ward.
And, despite occasional rain showers, a small crowd gathered outside Cabinet House gave the occasion as festive air as Mr. Masefield and his wife Jennifer arrived in a horse-drawn open carriage.
After swearing the oath of allegiance, Mr. Masefield told an audience of Island dignitaries, including Premier Pamela Gordon: "What a welcome, what a history....my wife and I did indeed know that we were to expect friendly people in a wonderful Island, but I have to say, in the short time I've been here, everything I've seen has exceeded my expectations. We really have had a wonderful welcome.'' He added that he was well aware of Bermuda's long history and tradition of democracy.
Mr. Masefield said: "I stand before you today both very proud and very humble to be given the opportunity to participate in part of that tradition, that flourishing democracy, the spirit of compromise and spirit of endeavour -- few people in the world have not heard of Bermuda in one sense or another and that sense is always good.'' And Mr. Masefield pledged to do his best in the role of Governor of Bermuda.
He said: "I am a public servant by training and I renew my pledge to serve -- to serve the people and Government of Bermuda to the best of my ability with my wife at my side.'' Earlier Ms Gordon officiallly welcomed the Masefields on behalf of the Island's Government.
She told the new Governor: "I am sure that the overcast skies in no way detract from the genuine and warm welcome we extend to you and Mrs.
Masefield.'' Ms Gordon added that Bermuda was "one of the nicest, friendliest and most sophisticated places in the world, a place where people take a great deal of pride in caried for their Country and their fellow citizens''.
"We have our challenges to be sure but Bermuda has always found the ability to rise to every challenge....and created a society which is the envy of many.'' Ms Gordon added that the new Governor would find a people with "a deep sense of commitment'' and who wanted to make their Country to prosper through "partnerships, coalitions and broad consensus as the secret of the Countries success.'' And she told Mr. Masefield: "Bermuda is delighted to have an individual of your skill and ability serving as Governor and Commander-in-Chief. I hope your tenure here will be long, happy and successful. Welcome to Bermuda.''
