Parish knocking on the doorstep to another title
Butterfield League champions with a 6-5 win over Eastern Stars at St. George's Cricket Club on Tuesday night.
Parish face Prison Officers tonight in a make-up match, and only a miracle upset can deny them joining Stars on 46 points and winning the title by games difference.
Stars' first defeat of the season was dealt once Cal Burgess and Derron Trott beat Dexter and Andrew Smith 21-17, 18-21, 21-17 in the first doubles for a winning 6-4 lead.
Parish had to play from behind for most of the night as they found Dexter Smith approaching top form.
Smith defeated Cory Berkeley 21-17, 22-20 to tie the series at one-all and then got by Burgess 21-16, 21-16 to open a 3-1 lead after Andrew Smith had beaten Derron Trott 12-21, 21-17, 21-19.
Parish drew level with Derron Trott beating Craig Trott and Berkeley getting by Andrew Smith. But Stars again went ahead when Dexter Smith beat Derron Trott, which clinched for him the Individual Championship with a 59-1 record.
The next match was crucial and it saw Burgess avenge an earlier loss to Andrew Smith to again level the series, then Berkeley expectedly got by Craig Trott to set up the doubles.
Stars won the second doubles, but it only served as consolation and a prelude to next Tuesday's Challenge Cup final at BAA (7.30 p.m.) between the same teams.
The draw for the Bermuda Open will also be held at BAA that night and interested persons should pick up entry forms at either Sports `R' Us, International Sports Shop or Sportsman's Shop. The deadline for entering is Tuesday at noon. The Open will be played on April 10 at Elliott Primary School starting at noon.
