Mr. Francis issued the warning after Kenneth Anthony Dyer, of Palmetto Road, admitted possessing a six-inch knife -- an offensive weapon -- in a public place.

Dyer, 24, who also admitted drinking an intoxicating beverage in public on May 29, told Police that someone had tried to attack him the night before and he was carrying the knife for protection.

Mr. Francis told Dyer he takes a dim view on those who carry weapons and he would be cracking down on such people.

Sgt. Peter Giles, prosecuting, said Police saw Dyer standing outside a Court Street bar drinking a beer.

The officers arrested him and during a search they discovered the six-inch knife in a case on his belt.

Mr. Francis fined Dyer a total of $350 for the offences.
