Van Putten, the 1990 champion, shot a five-over-par 75 giving him the early lead over Sam Murray, who managed a 78 on the day. One stroke further back is Adrian Crockwell while four players including defending champion Jack Wahl are all locked on 81, six strokes off the pace.

Among the women, Shirley Wildi, looking for her fourth Seniors victory got things off in a positive manner as she recorded an 84 to lead second-place pair Glenda Todd and Judy Kitson by five strokes. Diana Diel (90) stands fourth followed by Sue Pearman (92).

The Bermuda Golf Association's Amstel Summer League gets under way next Saturday, with the `A' Division playing at Belmont (tee off times 8.12 a.m. to 9.24 a.m.) and the `B' Division travelling to the St. George's Club for an 8.30 a.m. shot-gun start.

Team captains are reminded that teams must be phoned in to secretary Tom Smith before 5 p.m. on Tuesday at 238-1367.

Also, June 5 is the cut-off date for the Bermuda Amateur Stroke Play Championship scheduled for the Port Royal Golf Course from June 12-15. Entries along with fees should be mailed or delivered to the BGA P.O. Box HM 433, Hamilton, HM BX.
