But the nephew who reported her missing said how she got back to the United States was not his concern.

As of last night, it was understood Mrs. Edna Guttag was at St. Brendan's Hospital. She was taken there on Tuesday after she showed up at the American Airlines counter at the Civil Air Terminal without a ticket and attempted to get aboard an outbound plane.

Earlier, she had caused disruptions at two local hotels after apparently arriving in Bermuda on January 20.

What would happen to the woman was unknown last night. Staff at St. Brendan's would not comment on her case.

Det. Christopher O'Connell of the New York City Police Department said Mrs.

Guttag was reported missing in New York City on January 16. But she was found a day later and taken to St. Luke's Hospital for observation before she was released.

Her nephew, Mr. Barton Guttag of Valhalla, New York, said he reported her missing in New York. His aunt had a bad leg and he became concerned when she was away from her apartment for longer than usual, he said.

But, "she was located the next day,'' Mr. Guttag said. "Two days later, she went to Bermuda'' for a holiday. "She bought a ticket and went to Bermuda -- that we do know.'' Mr. Guttag said his aunt was "a very brilliant woman for her age,'' who "writes poetry.'' "I hope I'm that well when I'm her age,'' he said.

But Mr.

Guttag said he was a nephew who only spoke to his aunt once in a while, and he did not know how she lost her return ticket or how she would get back to New York. That was not his concern, he said.

Mrs. Guttag also has a brother in Florida, he said.

Ms Trudy Mulder, manager of Waterloo House, said Bermuda Police brought Mrs.

Guttag to her hotel after she apparently caused trouble at the Hamilton Princess.

The woman was only supposed to stay for one night but refused to check out the next day, Ms Mulder said.

While at Waterloo House, she verbally abused staff and caused trouble and Ms Mulder finally had to call Police, she said.

The woman kept saying she had come to Bermuda to meet her husband, who had a house in St. George's, said Ms Mulder. "It's really a sad case.'' Mrs. Guttag told Ms Mulder her married name was Berkowitz. Mr. Guttag said that name meant nothing to him.

Monday night was the last time Ms Mulder saw Mrs. Guttag. On Tuesday, she took a taxi to the Airport but arrived there without a ticket.
