Chapel of Ease to raise funds with old-fashioned `mini-fayre'
The Chapel of Ease has revived its annual St. David's style "Mini-Fayre'' to raise funds for repairs to the Church and it's hall.
And certain to be a big draw at today's fair is an anonymously donated pearl ring that will be a central part of a raffle.
Church members also hope to raise funds to help their search for a new minister since Rev. Don Moore retired a year ago.
"We are all holding together without a minister,'' Relda Rubinchak said this week. "It's a good spirit here and good fellowship is bringing us all together.'' She said the fair was once called the Victoria Day fair and held on May 24 for almost 60 years.'' "But it began to loose popularity as the Bermuda Day Parade began to increase in popularity,'' she said.
Ms Rubinchak added: "In the old days people would watch the dinghy races in St. George's harbour and then come over to the fair.'' This year's event will feature the food for which St. David's is best known -- fish chowder, conch stew, and mussel pie.
The fair includes a White Elephant and bake sales, and food stalls.
The usual attractions for children, the fun castle, and train rides, will keep them entertained but certain "old time games'' are sure to be a hit.
Church member Annie Williams said: "There will be Tombolla (drawing lots for groceries), a duck pond, throw the ball in the clown, darts, archery, and much more for the kids.'' The church received the pearl ring just under two years ago with only a note attached directing that the proceeds from its sale go toward roof repairs.
"We don't know who donated it,'' Ms Williams said. "It also came with a valuation slip.
"We did not use it for the Church's roof repairs but our Church Hall is crumbling and we have tried to repair the parsonage,'' she added.
Ms Williams said the parsonage is in need of great repairs, including new flooring.
"Its a huge undertaking and we need everyone's support,'' she added.
FOR A GOOD CAUSE -- This pearl ring was given to St. David's Chapel of Ease by an anonymous donour and will be raffled off to benefit the church, which neeeds to repair its hall.
