Chateau Elan brave the elements

Club of Braselton, Georgia, carded their worst round of the week -- 134 -- but still managed to win the net division by eight strokes.

Led by new pro Bunky Henry, Chateau Elan, who earlier in the week had given up the gross title they won last year, picked up the more significant net title as they broke a two-way tie with Avila G&CC III to win with strokes to spare despite the elements.

"When we started out it was the worst conditions I had ever played in,'' said Henry. "The wind was blowing so hard that you couldn't even stand up. It felt like it was blowing 50 to 60 miles an hour.'' Henry described the first two holes and the 18th as the toughest holes with number four probably the least affected by the wind.

"I really didn't have any idea what would be a good score,'' Henry admitted.

"We played each hole and tried not to give away too many strokes.'' Henry's team-mates were Dan Quillen, Randy Owens and Dennis DeSilva.

Cripple Creek of Bethany Beach, Delaware, shot the best round of 131 yesterday, as they moved from eighth to finish a creditable second while Eisenhower GC, Rolling Road and Avila G&CC III finished tied on 402. Avila had shared the lead with Chateau going into yesterday's final round.

Three teams -- Pawtucket I, Thomson I and Avila II -- decided the strong winds were too much and did not complete the final round.

Thomson were in third place in the standings going into the final round, just five strokes out of first place.

Pawtucket II won the one-day Pro-Am tournament for those teams failing to make the cut after Tuesday's second round. Pawtucket carded a 136 while Avila I finished four strokes back in second place. Westwinds and Meadowbrook were tied on 141.

The second-round scores were allowed to determine the gross and net winners when yesterday's strong winds forced the cancellation of the final round of the seventh annual Bermuda Valentines Mixed Foursomes Tournament yesterday at Castle Harbour GC. The heavy winds and rains proved too severe and play was called off after 45 minutes of play, leaving the second round scores to stand as Harreld and Marion Kirkpatrick of Boynton Beach, Florida, were declared the winners with a 36-hole total of 20-under-par 113.

Former champions Charlie and Joan Hartnett of Winchester, Massachusetts, had to settle for second place a stroke back, followed by Dick and Alice Drew and Newtonville, Massachusetts, on 117.

Local pair Bill and Shirley Pitt were the gross winners on 150 while Paul and Patricia Edwards took second by retrogression over James Pace and Terri-Lynn Calderon on 155.
