Martial arts stars join celebration
annual awards presentation ceremony this evening at Spice Valley School and a demonstration tomorrow featuring some of the world's top martial artists.
A training seminar is also scheduled for tomorrow, conducted by the legendary Grand Master Professor, Dr Moses Powell, founder of the Sanuces-Ryu Jiujitsu system.
This weekend's activities are hosted by Bermuda Sanuces-Ryu Jiujitsu Club, headed by Kyoshi Arnold Allen and are sanctioned by the Bermuda Martial Arts Federation and the International Council of Martial Arts.
Among the honourees are: Sifu David Simons, Sensei Bobby Smith, Sensei Jerry Bailey, Sensei Charles Butterfield, Sufi Delroy Flood, Sensei Roger Trimm, Sifu Eugene Ford, Master Richard Smith, Professor Sensei Alvin Lee and Sensei Gladwin (Roots) Phillips.
The awards ceremony, organised by Kyoshi Arnold Allen, chief instructor in Bermuda and the Caribbean of Sanuces-Ryu Jiujitsu, will follow the martial arts demonstration set for 6.30 this evening.
Allen put Bermuda on the map in March this year when he became one of 10, and the only person from the Caribbean region, to be inducted into the Martial Arts International Hall of Fame at their inaigural banquet and awards ceremony in Los Angeles, California. Allen runs his own dojo at Dellwood school gymnasium.
The honourees are being recognised for their contribution and dedication to martial arts over the years and especially for their work with the youth.
Allen said he felt some of the honourees indirectly helped him to achieve Hall of Fame status as their dedication and enthusiasm inspired him to train harder and set and achieve higher goals.
Tomorrow's demonstration will feature some of the top martial artists in the world, notably the "Living Legend'' Grand Master Professor, Dr Moses Powell and two other internatioal Hall of Fame members, Professor Bill McLeod and Professor Anthony Muhammad along with Professor Michael Black.
Professor Black stars in many instructional videos on the Suguru system of martial arts.
Also taking part in the demonstration will be the Bermuda Sanuces-Ryu family, fresh from training under Grand Master Powell in March, and martial artists from other local clubs.
