Penny settles for second
Championships yesterday in Fisher Island, New York, despite winning the final race of the seven race regatta.
Simmons, the defending champion, moved into contention going into yesterday's final two races when he was third and second in the fourth and fifth races.
The veteran sailor was then fourth in the sixth race, before winning the final race, though John Burnham did just enough with his second place in the final race to keep Simmons four points behind him in the final standings.
After a 12th in the fourth race, which was his throw-out, Burham finished with two thirds and a second to end on 17.75 points while Simmons totalled 21.75.
Bill Widnall was third on 30.75.
Another Bermudian, Craig Davis, while finishing 31 points behind Simmons, did match him in one regard...by winning race four. Davis ended the regatta with a 13th, eighth and 10th for 52.75 points.
