slatted types, the Bermuda National Trust and Planning Department have embarked on a joint campaign to encourage residents to keep their homes traditional.

They drafted flyers informing homeowners of the correct windows to buy if they want to maintain traditional architecture.

And they reminded, "Blinds are Bermudian.'' The flyers have been placed at all building supplies stores for the public to see.

Mr. Andrew Trimingham, chairman of the Historic Buildings Advisory Committee, said he had noticed "a distressingly large number'' of non-traditional windows on Bermuda homes.

Since the early 18th Century, almost every home built had traditional wooden sash, six-over-six-pane windows with hurricane shutters.

Nowadays, however, those windows were rapidly being replaced by louvred windows.

"Because of obvious cost factors, people have taken to using leaded, PVC and almost anything they can get their hands on,'' he said.

Mr. Trimingham said the campaign was not seeking to try and bar people from using modern alternatives to the old-style windows.
