A Canadian visitor who called a senior Customs official ``nigger'' after arriving at the Airport, was fined in Magistrates' Court yesterday for
Susan Margaret Bryson of Ontario admitted the charge.
Sgt. Peter Giles, prosecuting, told Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis that Bryson, 34, was searched by Customs officers at the Airport on Wednesday.
During the search, a Customs officer found a wrapped package in Bryson's baggage. She snatched the package from his hands and began tearing at the wrapping. The contents of the package were not revealed to the court.
But Sgt. Giles said a further search revealed liquor in Bryson's bag, for which she was told she would have to pay duty.
Upon hearing this, Bryson shouted obscenities at the officer.
A senior Customs heard the commotion, and asked if there was a problem.
Bryson told the officer: "You're not a cop. You're nothing but a nigger.'' She then attempted to leave the arrivals area without paying duty on the liquor.
Bryson's lawyer, Mr. Carlson Phillip, told Mr. Francis that his client apologised, and that the matter was a "misunderstanding.'' Mr. Francis fined Bryson $200.
