Jones has to settle for second amongst seniors
senior competition, falling out of first place and finishing second at the Trinidad and Tobago Open Golf tournament yesterday.
Entering the day with a one stroke lead over American W.Peterson and three ahead of his compatriot P.Millhouse, Jones suffered through a tortuous round, which saw temperatures soaring in the 90-degree range.
Jones ended up four strokes behind Millhouse on 242 with Peterson third, one stroke further back. Millhouse shot a 76 for a three-round total of 238.
The local professional registered eight bogeys and a triple bogey as the lightning-fast greens again proved his undoing.
"A lot of the time when putting if you even just rolled the ball towards the hole and missed it would just take off and keep on going to where you might have a six-foot putt coming back,'' said Jones, who pocketed $750. "I'm a little disappointed because I felt I could have won it.
"I was driving the ball well and hitting my irons okay, but it was just that the greens were so tough and virtually unreadable.'' Millhouse drew level with Jones at the 10th hole and from there the duo swapped the lead until they reached the par-five 16th hole where Jones was forced into a triple bogey eight after he twice found himself in the water hazard and forced to take penalty drops.
This was all the American would need as both he and Jones bogeyed the final two holes.
"It was hot! Really hot!'' said Jones. "I was so hot and frustrated coming in that I drove right to the hotel and jumped in a cold tub of water.'' Jones was unsure of whether he had made the cut to continue playing in the overall tournament today, but one Bermudian assured of another round is Dwayne Pearman.
Pearman similarly found the going a bit hairy as he finished with five-over-par 75 and dropped into a tie for 15th on 221.
Mixing in three bogeys, a double bogey, 12 pars and two birdies, Pearman virtually fell out of contention for the top three places.
"I feel like I have to be way under par to come in the top 10,'' said Pearman, who was recently announced as the new professional at Ocean View Golf Club. "I'll be happy just to get a good score tomorrow (today).'' John Reeves of the United States recaptured the overall lead with a 71 for a total of 213.
