Lister warms up for Games

Winnipeg this month, found his best form in week five of the American Airlines Bowling Spectacular at Warwick Lanes.

Lister, who with Antoine Jones won a silver medal at last year's Commonwealth Games, had been overshadowed by the likes of Jones and Dean Lightbourn in the first month of the event.

But he showed he was ready for the upcoming trip to Canada, destroying his opponents in the scratch division with a 651 series.

Lister also claimed the top prize for the third game with a 256. Oscar Andrade won the first with 238 and Mike McCallum the second with 236.

Lister's fellow prison officers Gregory Simons and Troy Richardson also enjoyed success, placing first and fifth respectively in the handicap division with scores of 719 and 693, and Simons won top game prize for his 288 handicap game. Darlene Raynor placed second with 264.

Other prize-winners in the handicap division were Vernette Ferguson (714), Oscar Andrade (696), Darnell Raynor (694), Walter Wilson (681) and Charletta Samuels (680). Elliott Douglas and Ann Harris tied for eighth place on 671.

To qualify for the finals, players must bowl in a minimum of six of the nine weekly tournaments and place in the top 15 in any one of them.

TEENS HEAD FOR BRAZIL SOC Teens head for Brazil Six young footballers from North Village have been invited to Brazil later this month to further their soccer education.

The six, aged 15 and 16, will travel to Sao Paulo where they will benefit for a second time from the training of coach Jose Campos.

Campos invited the teenagers to South America after being impressed with them at the Brazilian Soccer Academy in North Carolina last year.

The players -- Corey Scott, Nikai and Nicco Albouy, Kujuan Simmons, Travis Tucker and Keith Martin -- will be away for around three weeks.

They are currently preparing for the trip by training at Elbow Beach with Derek (Rocky) Bean.

SWIM SHOWDOWN SW Swim showdown The battle for swimming dominance will continue this weekend in what has so far been a closely contested summer ocean series.

In both male and female categories, each of the first three races has had a different winner. Mike Cash, Michael O'Connor and Ronald Cowan have each won once, as have Claire Mancell, Kris Cash and Kiera Aitken.

The fourth event of the series, which will take place at Elbow Beach tomorrow at 4.00 p.m., will be the longest so far, featuring a one and a half mile advanced swim and a three quarter mile novice race.

Remaining races in the series, which is organised by the Bermuda Triathlon Association and sponsored by Pepperidge Farm, will be staged on July 24 at the Causeway and August 14 at Evans Bay.

CYCLISTS ON-LINE CYC Cyclists on-line Bermuda Bicycle Association have joined the "information highway'', having gone on-line this week with an official web site on the internet.

BBA president Greg Hopkins said that officials had been working for months with local company Solution Inc. in building the site.

The local race calendar, results service, photography gallery and a cycling links page to popular cycling web sites are included and Hopkins believes that the sport will benefit internationally as a result.

"The Conyers, Dill and Pearman Grand Prix has its own page together with on-line entry forms, we advertise our web-site in the Velo News (world wide publication) and judging by the response the site will help a great deal with arranging the event,'' he said.

Meanwhile, the BBA celebrates another first on Sunday when they stage criterium races at Dockyard.

"I have been negotiating this for a long time, but with work and other improvements in the area always taking place it's been difficult finding a free weekend until now. We are very excited,'' said Hopkins.
